How the tip calculator works
Enter your bill, choose a tip, and the calculator shows the tip amount and the total. If you are paying with friends, set the number of people to see what each person owes. You can enter the tip as a percentage, as a dollar amount, or as the final total you want to pay. The other values update to match.
Formulas
Tip = Bill × Tip percentage ÷ 100Total = Bill + TipTotal per person = Total ÷ Number of people
All amounts are calculated in whole cents and rounded half up, so the figures match what you would pay.
Quick mental maths
For a bill of $120.80, move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, which is $12.08. Double it for 20%, which is $24.16. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount to itself, which gives $18.12.
Common tipping guidelines
These ranges are common in the United States. Customs vary by country and venue, and some places add a service charge or do not expect tips.
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15% to 20% |
| Bar tab | 15% to 20%, or $1 to $2 per drink |
| Food delivery | 10% to 20% |
| Taxi or ride share | 10% to 20% |
| Hair salon or barber | 15% to 20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $2 to $5 per night |
| Hotel porter | $1 to $2 per bag |
Tip guidelines are general suggestions, not rules. Tip based on the service you received.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For a quick estimate, move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, double that for 20%, or add half of it to the 10% figure for 15%. The calculator does the exact maths to the cent.
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15% to 20% is a common range for table service, and 10% to 20% is typical for many other services. Customs vary by country and by type of venue. In some places tipping is not expected at all, and some restaurants add a service charge automatically.
Should I tip on the total with tax or the pre-tax amount?
Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal because tax is not part of the service. Others tip on the full bill for simplicity. To tip on the pre-tax amount, open the pre-tax option and enter the sales tax shown on your bill.
What happens when the bill does not split evenly?
Money is paid in whole cents, so some totals cannot be divided exactly. When that happens, the calculator shows how many people pay one cent more, so the shares add up to exactly the total.
What if a service charge is already on my bill?
A service charge is often used in place of a tip, so check your bill first. If it already covers the staff, an extra tip is optional. You can enter the charge as part of the bill, or set the tip to 0% to see the total.
What does rounding up do?
Rounding up raises the tip slightly so the total, or each person's share, lands on a whole-dollar amount. The calculator then shows the effective tip percentage you are actually leaving.
