What Score Do You Need on Your Final Exam?
Use one formula to find the final exam score you need for your target grade, see how the exam weight changes the answer, and what to do if it is over 100%.

Before a final exam, most students want to know one thing: what do I need to score to get the grade I want? The answer comes from a single formula.
How a course grade is made
Your course grade is a weighted average of your work so far and your final exam:
Course grade = current grade × (1 − weight) + exam score × weight
The weight is the share of the course grade that the final is worth, written as a decimal. A final worth 25% has a weight of 0.25.
Solve for the exam score
Rearranging the formula gives the score you need:
Score needed = (goal − current grade × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
Suppose your current grade is 88%, your goal is 90%, and the final is worth 25%:
(90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96%
Why the weight matters
The heavier the final, the more it can move your grade. A student with an 85% average who wants a 90% course grade needs:
| Final exam weight | Score needed |
|---|---|
| 10% | 135% (out of reach) |
| 20% | 110% (out of reach) |
| 25% | 105% (out of reach) |
| 30% | 101.67% (out of reach) |
| 40% | 97.5% |
| 50% | 95% |
When the answer is more than 100%
If the score you need is above 100%, a perfect exam is not enough, unless extra credit is available. Check your weight and current grade first, because a wrong weight is the most common reason for a surprising answer. Then look at a lower goal that is within reach, ask about extra credit or grade replacement, and talk to your instructor early.
When the answer is zero or negative
That means you have already reached your goal. Even a 0% on the final would leave your course grade at or above the grade you want.
Know your inputs
Your current grade should cover all the work except the final. Your weight is in your syllabus. If your instructor curves the exam or drops your lowest scores, treat the result as an estimate.
